Original Model 5

Post by pmh » Sat Nov 10, 2012 6:53 pm

Couldn't resist:-

Image

Listed at 1975 it's in very good condition.

Managed to get it posted for £75.

.177 as should be all air pistols of this type

As expected with Originals, a high quality pistol, but it is very big indeed.

Still, it oozes with all that lovely retroness.

Kind regards,

Phil

That is just the the same as my Model 5 ( the first ones were moulded in a grey plastic), and when the very first recoiless version of it first came out ( Model 6) I bought one new and used it until the Model 10 was announced.

I ordered the Model 10 as soon as it was released and have to say although I enjoyed the Model 5 and 6, the old one piece plastic moulded handle ( stock/grip) gave a very high barrel position that always felt a little "top heavy".

The Model 10 was a revelation compared to these two that transformed the Original pistol range completely.

Later Model 5 and 6 pistols were improved a little as they dumped the one piece plastic mouding, but retained the same mechanics.
Feinwerkbau P40 Tricolour wanted.........still !

I always thought of the Model 5 as the thinking mans BSA Scorpion.

I believe these started back in the 1950s, and early models actually had a wooden grip.

This one needs resealing, but I never got around to it.

It is a nice pistol to look at, and was a good introduction to target shooting without having to pay too much.

Even though it didn't have the GISS system, it did also come as a Model 5M with wooden target grips.

Kind regards,

Phil

I owned a wooden grip one from 1957 or there abouts - one of the Diana branded examples. Exceptional build quality but fierce recoil that seemed to vibrate down the trigger. I didnt enjoy shooting it and sold it on - the new owner found it OK so all was well. The wood grip was almost identical in shape to the plastic one that replaced it.

Was probably swapped to plastic as a cost saving exercise.

I do think some of the early wooden grips look like a rushed O Level Woodwork project though.

Phil

hi , just stripped my mod 5 .177. and the piston seal had turned to dust! pistol is like new but the seal has perished, so just ordered one from protek supplies. very good place for spares and a lot cheaper than another airgun spares dealer that charges the earth. will post results when rebuilt :D

Did you finally manage to pick up a .177, or is this on your .22?

Protek seems a very good site.

I have used Chambers in the past, and John Knibbs also comes recommended.

I need to change the seals in mine, I just need to get around to it.

My 6G was sided by the legendary Lawrie Amatruda.

Kind regards,

Phil

Excellent link to a good strip down guide.

How much pretension is there in the spring?

Do you need a clamp or can you remove the end cap by hand?

Kind regards,

Phil

end cap removal

Post by peter griffin » Sun Mar 17, 2013 8:35 am

after taking out the grub screw and putting it in a box so it cant be lost i used i piece of doubled over towel and mole grips to undo the end cap . using the broken barrel as a lever . once its undone by a couple of turns wrap the end cap in towel and unscrew fully. when it lets go its not too compressed , about 2 to 3 ins of preload. it should be ok to put back together if your fairly strong. i think a rubber oil filter tool would be ideal for the initial few turns but dont have one. or clamped in wood in a vice. hope this is of help. cheers peter griffin

I'd say 3 to 3.5 ftlbs at the most.

If you could get a nice even 450 fps you should be doing ok.
