Diana Model 2 Tinplate Pop-Out
Today I received one of the most important air pistols in my collection - a tinplate Diana Model 2 from about 1939.
The reason why it is so important to me can be read in the text on bobsairguns.com, but briefly it is exactly the same as the very first air pistol I ever had when I was a very young boy - and it is about in the same condition too!

Here are some quick "snaps" of my new tin plate Diana Model 2 pop-out air pistol - the pride of my collection!
This pistol is pre-war and was new in 1939 - and is in better nick than I am !

Excellent little pistol.
Many of us started with something similar, and it is important that as many of these guns, as possible, are preserved for future generations.
Kind regards,
Phil

Re: Diana Model 2 Tinplate Pop-Out
This one will get well looked after - unlike my first one that got well used but was not treated too kindly.
When I was age 4 - 5 years old I could not cock it any other way than by pushing it against a wall or the ground, so the end of the barrel got a bit roughed-up.
I remember my first tinplate Model 2 had more power than this one - but then again - I remember it as being a lot bigger too!

Re: Diana Model 2 Tinplate Pop-Out
There must be hundreds of us of that certain age hat started with one like that, I certainly did, mine had a chunky wood grip, I thought it was Diana but perhaps not?
Re: Diana Model 2 Tinplate Pop-Out
I shot my Diana tinplate Model 2 at a target at 6 yards - what was I thinking about ?
Once I had overcome the quite stiff trigger, it sort of "lobbed" the pellet in an arc towards the unsuspecting redrob bell target and did actually clatter it, but the sound of my silly giggling drowned out most of this as I remembered that sometimes fond memories are best left this way - and not spoilt by the harsh reality witnesed when relived many years later

With respect Robin, there are thousands of us I believe.RobinC wrote:There must be hundreds of us of that certain age hat started with one like that, I certainly did, mine had a chunky wood grip, I thought it was Diana but perhaps not?
In the thread "most Iconic Pistol" I voted for 'the Gat' but what I think I really meant was any mass produced cheapish pistol of the Pop Out variety.
I was speaking to a chap yesterday who recalls his first gun at age 11 - a Gat. This is not an uncommon conversation. That and "what was your first air rifle" and two out of three answers are 'Diana'. Amazing really when you think. Back in the day I used to walk up the main road with my rifle over my shoulder and no-one batted an eye, try that today!

I think the brand name Diana is referred to by lots of people in the same way as all vacuum cleaners are called Hoovers, and those with fond recollections of those heady days when life was a lot more relaxed and everyone had an air rifle or pistol of some sort or another can be generalised by most that have not chosen to continue their interest in air weapons in this way.
When the previous ownership of an air rifle or air pistol is best summed up by saying - "I had a Diana" - we all know what they mean - I had a "Diana" air rifle too - but mine was made by BSA !

Nice pistol, not seen one like that before.
My Mum's one has a wooden grip and is more common on the web than that one.
Entering it in the MPL??

Re: Diana Model 2 Tinplate Pop-Out
I think you are right - there are very few of the tinplate ones about - it took me well over 50 years to find the one shown on my site, but it could be like the proverbial number 3 bus and we see thousands of them pop-up (sorry) for sale now !Nyctophiliac wrote:Nice pistol, not seen one like that before.

If we both take a second entry to the 6 yard MPL competition to shoot our old Diana pop-outs against each other, we will both have plenty of unspoiled target to practice with in the future!

True, but I will have many, many more holes in my garage wall and smashed windows to boot!zooma wrote:

Now if we were to have a 3 yard MPL just for the pop-outs?
Safety glasses and a cricketer's cup would be appropriate, too.

Even 3 yards would be a stiff challenge - and we are more likely to get hit by the rebounds than the target !
