I think the horizontal scratches are sanding marks and the vertical "cracks" may in fact be just open grain.

The vertical "cracks" certainly does look like grain.

I'm watching Tanks refinishing thread with interest. I wish I'd read the rifle thread before I started on my Original 27!

The "cracks" on the HW75 are open grain but it is far more pronounced at the top of the grip for some reason. I'm not sure what caused the scratches as I bought the gun used. They don't look like any attempt at refinishing - more like a handling problem.
