Original Model 5

Post by zooma » Tue Jul 09, 2013 11:09 pm

I was lucky enough to buy a really nice condition Original Model 5 this week, and it arrived in the post today so I was able to shoot it at the RMTC club for the first time tonight.

This is without any doubt the best "kicker" I have ever shot - and I am delighted with it !

To my amazement most of my fellow club members hated it - and one even claimed an injury received from the kick :o (wimp)

My opinion is that this non-recoilless pistol has less of a kick than any other non-recoilless pistol I have ever shot, it has a delightfully smooth trigger, it is very smooth and easy to cock and it is very accurate at 10 meters.

I never thought I would find a kicker that would be nicer to shoot than my GAMO Centre - but this Model 5 is better in every respect - except for the pointed front sight shape ( I prefer a square shaped foresight) and of course I recognise that many target shooters do not like break barrel pistols.

This pistol will get used in the MPL competition and I can strongly recommend one to any MPL competitor - except the wimps :naughty:

I agree - these are great pistols

My very first pistol was a Mod 5, bought new from Bagnall & Kirkwood in Newcastle around 1969/1970. Sadly no more due to house fire in 1985 but remembered with fondness

Hello,

I don't normally go for German spring powered air pistols especially break barrel designs (although I have got 3 littleTell 2s) but as noted in a previous post I recently acquired a pre-war Diana Model 5 Target on medical grounds and have been pleasantly surprised at it's ease of use and accuracy. I thought it would be a bit cumbersome and unbalanced but it comes up fine and the relatively long barrel provides an extended sight radius leading to a clearer sight picture.

Regards

Brian

I saw the blood! :o
Geoff will probably never play the piano again [ ... all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order ... ].

It will be interesting to see what you score in the MPL.

Jackie (Geoffs wife) shot it and scored a 9 with her first shot!!..............and Geoff can't play the piano anyway

The Model 5 is a pussycat - nice and easy to cock and does not have much of a recoil either.

I had one just like that back in the early seventies, and then bought a very similar looking Model 6 when they first came out - but the Model 5 that I have just bought is the later type with the slant grip and I find it much easier to hold than the early types with the one piece moulded "military" style grip.

It still has the high sightline of course (when compared to the GAMO Centre or Model 10) but it does shoot well and it has a lovely trigger.

Further testing with my "new to me" slant grip Model 5 pistol I have found the best results have come from the Meisterkugeln 4.50 pellets.

I mention this as it may be helpful to others who are trying to squeeze the most consistent results from their own classic "kickers".

Just as you Bob, In liked the pistol in every respect except for the foresight.
I bought a foresight with different reticules as suggested by Phil but although it all fitted it was plastic so I ended up changing back.....never thought to send it with the pistol.
Do you want me to to post it off to you....no good to me!

Hi Eric,

The foresight tunnel and elements arrived today - they look very good - thank you for sending them to me.

Hi Bob,
The foresight is an Air Arms S200 and the elements are Anschutz so it's decent quality although the foresight is only plastic or "composite" as they say nowadays.
I couldn't see me using them so thought as you like to play around with your target pistols they'd have a better home.
Let us know if you feel they improve the sighting of the "5", I thought they did but didn't like the "plasticity".

Thanks Eric,

I will fit it and give it a try.

One of these front tunnels sights has been fitted to my Webley Osprey Supertarget and it works well so I will try it on the Model 5 to see how it copes with the pressure of cocking the pistol (the front sight takes the load every time).

I am sure it will work well and I will be very pleased to use it.

Just a progress report - not much to report really - the Model 5 still shoots better than its current owner and I have gone back to the original sights for the time being as I am getting used to them but the front sight option is a welcome change that is available to "freshen things up a bit" when I fancy a change!

Many thanks to Eric for selling me the pistol and for sending the front sight options too :D

Did the original 5 have any serial number? I can not see one on mine.
I just purchased a mint condition one for around £100 and as said is a pleasure to shoot.

What would one use to lubricate the breach seal?
