It would be good to have a competition for recoiling pistols only - maybe this is something we could include in next seasons 6 yard MPL postal competition?

My guess would be that this could be very popular and I would also guess that the likely rivals for this .177 competition would include:

HW70, Diana/Original Model 5, Walther LP53, Webley Junior, Mk 1, Senior, Premier, Hurricane and Typhoon along with some of the less common types such as the Jumbo Record and Acvokes etc as well as the various underlever types from GAMO including the Centre and Target.

This could be fun and a great excuse to get some of these old pistols back in operation again.

Yes such a comp would be a good idea hopefully on CAPA!, but surely you can't be serious about including "Wobblies" with real pistols  your supposed to shoot pellets with them not chuck em at the target from 5 Ft away, M. :laughing-rolling:

Ha -come on then - why not enter your HW 70 in the next 6 yard MPL postal series?

It would be good to see how it performs over the 6 month series as I think it will do quite well and it should give some of those awful :naughty: Wobblies a bit of a kicking (perhaps  ).

Does anyone know the production dates of the HW70 pistol with medium brown stocks and without the auto safety feature? What is the average c-t-c 5 shot group accuracy at 10 meters of this pistol?

Would this pistol be powerful enough to take down a rat at 10 to 15 meters in a single shot? Or does it have enough energy to punch a hole through and through an empty steel tin can at those ranges?

The HW70 is a nice target pistol but it is not suitable for hunting rats or for hunting anything else and I guess your question about the pistols ability to punch holes in steel cans is another power related question that suggests a rifle may be more suitable for your requirements.

No air pistol is normally considered an ideal choice for hunting or for humanly despatching animals or birds as the maximum legal power permitted at 6 ft/lbs is only half that of the 12ft/lbs legal limit for an air rifle. Also the average shooter would not find it possible to guarantee a clean kill shot with an air pistol and so it should not be considered.

Short "ratter" type's of air rifles can be a good choice for hunting rats where a shorter length of hunting weapon can give more manoeuvrability in confined places such as cellars and barns etc.

What would you say this pistol's average accuracy be at 10 to 15 meters?

At 10m it should be more than capable at putting all the shots, one handed, in the black of a10m target, and equally of putting a majority in the black, with a bit of practice, at 15m.

An excellent pistol, with the earlier models benefiting from not having the automatic safety.

Kind regards,

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the info. But, why did you say the HW70 benefits from not having an auto safety? Is the one without the auto safety better?

I would be happy if the accuracy of the HW70 be 1 inch groups at 10 meters or better.

Thanks gain!

The auto safeties are not the target shooters friend. More times than not, you will probably forget to flick it off and try and take your shot with it on.

This can break the concentration and quickly becomes annoying, just ask anybody who had tried a competition with one.

I very much doubt it is capable of 1 inch groups single handed at 10m.

Kind regards,

Phil

What I meant to ask was if the HW70 is capable of 1 inch groups at 10 meters bench rested. Thanks again.

Having not owned one, all I can say is more than likely, but probably not always.

I have recently purchased an HW70 from a dealer who had the pistol in storage for at least 10 years. When I test fired it the first time, the first shot group I got was 1-7/16" c-t-c with five shots at 10 meters which I thought is pretty good for a new spring pistol. However, I noticed after a few more shots, the shot groups spread wider shooting high, low, left, and right without adjusting the sights, and also noticed, instead of firing pellets straight through, it was just lobbing the pellets down range, sometimes having the pellet tumble sideways as it hits the target paper I was shooting at. In other words, it wasn't grouping anymore and lack expected pellet velocity. I even had one shot that wasn't able to launch the pellet out of the barrel. All the while, the pistol was dieseling as any new spring gun would.

My question is, is this normal for a new spring pistol like the HW70 or am I having other troubles with the gun?

Sounds normal for a new/stored gun.

You probably need a full tin of pellets through it before it settles down.

Would you suggest that I stripdown the pistol and clean the piston cylinder or should I let it be and just fire off a tin of pellets to break it in like you mentioned? I'm worried because the groups I get are erratically spread across more than 6 inches at 10 meters with the pistol seeming to be just lobbing pebbles downrange.

Thanks Phil.

Hi phil that is quite a large spread at 10 yds, I would suggest for safety reasons strip her down and try again, hope you sort it mate,
