Duracoat

Post by garryt » Sun May 19, 2013 3:50 pm

Hi guys,

A really cheeky plug, but I have a Duracoat service which I believe is rare in the UK.
I've been into shooting for over 35 years and have become really fed up with some of the less than satisfactory factory finishes which seem to fall off from looking at them.....

Duracoat is basically a two part epoxy resin which was designed by Lauer Weaponry in the US specifically for firearms.
Whilst not indestructible (is any finish?) it resists holster wear and the usual knocks and dings considerably better than the stock finish.

All work is carried out as per Duracoat's recommendations, ie; the item is blasted back to the metal with 120 grit aluminium oxide prior to refinishing etc.
So, should any of your classic pistols be looking a bit worse for wear, you know where to come.... ;)

Please note that I have a minimum charge (no matter how small the item) as I have to mix a minimum qty of paint each time to maintain an accurate paint to hardener ratio, which is crucial. I then still have the clean up procedure. This is mainly a hobby, so I keep prices to a minimum and don't make much more than beer money..... ;)

Thanks for your time and comments are welcome.
My work can be seen over on the UBC in the tech section and on my website.

Regards

Garry

This is an endorsement of Garry's work, (i'll get the Beer tokens off you later Garry) - I was rebuilding my FWB300s and if anyone has ever owned one of these classic guns you will know that the front sight assembly is made of - well - pot metal frankly.
I considered all my options and I have had a bit of experience in the painting department so I knew it would be Etch Primer -> Basecoat -> Finish. By the time I bought all the required paints I was looking at twenty quids worth! So although the Duracoat cost looked - on the face of it - an expensive proposition compared to the cost of all of the required materials it started to look reasonable. Add in the fact that it will not be coming off in a hurry it was a no-brainer.

From the photograph above you can see that the inside of the unit has been coated as well. I had reservations that the threads would have too much coating on them for the 18mm sight element retainer.
I needn't have worried, and this is what makes Garry's work stand apart, it fit perfectly because, as Garry explained above, he has had 35 years worth of experience at this and he knows what he is doing.

My Walther front barrel weight is on it's way back soon so I will put some pics up of that too. So you needn't worry guys, we are not going to see Duracoated FAS 604's anytime soon but I'll bet the bottom frame of a FWB 65 would look factory fresh after Garry's treatment!

Now there's a thought..........

Well, Garry emailed me a while back. He wanted to know how the Duracoat was holding up, how was it's durability and any other feedback.
Well, frankly Garry, I am not sure - I really take very good care of my guns so for me to bang them about would be like fingernails accross a Blackboard!
But I do know this - there are a pile of parts on my workbench being bagged up and sent down to you shortly. I would not consider any other type of finish to replace the factory finishes (apart from Blueing of course) as Garry does an absolutely superb job. This is not just some bloke who bought a paint kit and hopes to "make a bit extra". Garry understands the needs and requirements, he understands thread clearance and machine fit. Plus, he spent a great deal of time paint spraying as a profession.
I generally "do it myself" because I cannot trust anyone to do it right. I have no qualms about sending stuff to Garry, it comes back right. A refreshing change nowadays!
