New (to me) Webley

A place to discuss all things Webley. As this is probably the most collected airgun maker we felt it deserved a section of its own.

New (to me) Webley

Postby Dave88 » Fri Sep 28, 2018 7:37 pm

It's a long time since I had an air gun but I have acquired (through my wife's family) a Mark 1 air pistol in .22.

It seems to be an early one from my investigations so far (some great info on this website) - no knurling on the barrel and a 5 digit serial number on the left hand side. I've taken it apart and lubed it up and it seems to shoot consistently. It feels like a great piece of kit and the bluing is decent for its age. It seems to like the 5.6mm wasps but not 5.5mm pellets.

I'm one happy camper so far!

Hello Dave,

Sorry about the late response as I don't frequent this site as often as I once did.

If you let me know the Ser No, I should be able to give you some idea of when your pistol was made. The so called 'Straight Grip' Mk1s were made between 1924 and 1935 before being replaced with the 'Slant Grip' models which continued to be available right up until 1964 when the MK1 and Senior models were combined within one model called the 'Premier'.

Hello Dave,
The pre-war Slant Grip Mk1s Ser Nos started at 50000 in 1935 and continued up to approximately Ser No 65000 in 1939. The barrel knurling wasn't introduced until 1939 when Ser Nos for Webley products was also discontinued.
Your Mk1 is therefore quite an early early example probably made in late 1935 or early 1936.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Brian
