Tempest Transition Model?

Hello
I have just been looking at an advertisement for a "Webley Tempest Transition Model". It notes that this is a rare item and it seems to consist of a Tempest body with a Hurricane barrel and bits. It states that the use of a Hurricane barrel results in more power than a standard Tempest. (This sounds dodgy to me as I had thought that the limiting factor is the air compression system). Is there such a thing?
Regards
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

To the best of my knowledge there was never a transitional Tempest as described which came from the factory even as a prototype. As you are probably already aware, the Tempest was a cut-down Hurricane with the front and back end cut-off to restore the compact dimensions of the earlier models. Both the Hurricane and Typhoon were originally launched to meet the threat from overseas designs specifically aimed at precision target shooting . A necessary requirement was that these needed to provide a longer sight radius resulting in a considerable increase in overall size. Following a bit of an outcry from British shooters, Webley returned to the previous compact dimensions in the simplest way possible by modifying the existing Hurricane design.

The pistol you describe could be the result of somebody playing around with non-standard parts to produce a hybrid pistol possibly to pass off as a transitional model. As you rightly say, a longer barrel would provide a longer sight radius, but no increase in power.

Regards

Brian
