my webley 'frankenstein'..............
thought fellow members might be interested in seeing a ‘curiosity’ i picked up cheaply last weekend.
i call it my webley ‘frankenstein’ as it seems to be a mark 1 second series body (#1846) mated with a post war mark 1 ‘new model’ straight knurl barrel.
it’s not the prettiest with hardly any original bluing but the wear on both the body and barrel looks to be consistent with them both having been together for a very long time. if only it could tell me it’s history. maybe the original barrel bent or something snapped and the post war barrel was the only replacement part offered to the owner that would fit.
I would welcome your comments my friends…………..

Re: my webley 'frankenstein'..............
A very tidy and interesting Webley.
Despite it not being 100% original, it is as it was owned and used originally, so has great curiosity value.
As long as it shots well, that's all that matters.
If it's .177, then it's perfect for the MPL.
You'll have to post some target pics to show how well it groups.
Kind regards,
Phil

Re: my webley 'frankenstein'..............
I think that Webleys are pretty forgiving of mixed and matched parts - on this one the barrel looks good to me. The older ones also look good with the patina of age in my opinion do no worries re the lack of bluing.
This looks like a great example that deserves to be shot regularly

Re: my webley 'frankenstein'..............
thanks for the comments my friends. it is in .177 and it will be shot on a regulary basis. once i replace the breech seal i will post up some targets. i have shot it with it's original leather seal and the best i can group is about 2" at 6 meters.
wish me luck and keep those comments coming in..................

"Frank" has a character of his own so is a worthwhile addition to any collection....thanks for showing him to us!

eric, thanks for the name, 'frank' it is from now on............
'frank is not on his own'!
it seems that 'frank' is not on his own, he has siblings. i came across these mark 1's also having later/shorter barrels on google images.....................
Re: my webley 'frankenstein'..............
Whilst one swallow doesn't make a summer, several do.
As you have found several "frankensteins" this becomes a bit intriguing.
Did the original barrels come unrifled, and this was an upgrade?
Kind regards,
Phil

Re: my webley 'frankenstein'..............
from what i have read, the original longer barrels were rifled and so is the shorter one fitted to 'frank'..............

I attended the Wallis & Wallis Webley auction in 2006 where a very early "spring clip" Mk1 (Ser No 177) which was in relic condition and had a post war barrel sold for around £600 with commission !
