Target shooting near Northampton

Postby dnic » Sat Mar 29, 2014 10:15 am

I appears that my move to Northampton last year, has it consequences, I can't find a target club within 20 miles of my house.

Well in fact there is one, Sywell. Had a look on their website to find out what type of discipline they shoot. Then I noticed the costs, £25 joining fee, £90 annual fee + £3 every time you use the range. How does this compare to what other clubs are charging?

It does vary around the country.

I know clubs that charge £120, but that's it, no range fees, and even the target are then free in some cases.

I know that North Manchester Target Club is £20 to join, then £3 for the range fee.

I think a joining feed on top of an annual fee is a bit of a joke really. If the organisers of the club run it properly then it's just not needed. Clubs should exist to cover costs, not have a tidy bank account.

Just my opinion of course. :D

If you can find a few like minded individuals in your area, then it's not difficult to start a club up.

Kind regards,

I now have so many airguns I've had to make a list, which is >>HERE<<

Hello David,

I shoot at the Novio Magnum Pistol Club down in West Sussex. We have an annual membership fee of £120 with no further charges other than the cost of targets or ammunition. We meet on two evenings each week, but also have access to our outdoor 25 / 50 metre range at any time during the week providing two full members are present.

I would say our fees are on the low side, especially given the standard of the facilities, so I reckon the costs you have quoted seem a little on the high side.

One of my clubs charges £150 annual membership but there's no range fees (I'm not sure about a joining fee). For that though there's all day shooting on Saturday & Sunday plus a day in the week (other days are possible by arrangement) - on two 100 yard ranges, a 300 yard range & a 400 to 1000 yard range on the same complex.

A healthy membership list supports such facilities - in my reasonably long experience of club shooting the membership numbers greatly affect the fee. Some clubs at first sight can appear to be overly expensive but the cost of facilities can mean they barely break even. That said - I consider joining fees to be a bit of a 'money-grab' as there are hardly any admin costs involved.

Thank you, Phil, Brian, Russell.

Sywell appears to have a number of clubs, using the facilities. Reading the site info they welcome visitors on their shooting evenings. I will pop along one night this week to have a gander at them, hopefully meet some members and see what happens.

Regarding charges, joining fee aside (I don't agree with the charge) if one goes, say once a week for 40 weeks, add another £120 to the yearly cost. Starting to look expensive in my opinion.

I will trot along this week and report back to you all.
