Timber for rifle stocks

Post by Rincewind » Mon Apr 22, 2013 8:05 pm

Just been reading Graham's articles on stock finishing and I reckon that they are probably the best around.  Thanks graham.

I know that walnut is generally  regarded as the best ( I've got a walnut stock that is  about   200 years old )  but what other timber are good for stock-making?

I do like a nice Walnut for a stock.

I have also seen beach used, which does make a pleasant stock if finished properly, but don't really know of any other wood used.

Tiger striped maple is nice, common on guitars, but I am not sure if it would be any good on a stock.

Kind regards,

Phil

I believe maple was used on some Pennsylvania rifles but it may have been due to local availability.
