Webley Fans

A place to discuss all things Webley. As this is probably the most collected airgun maker we felt it deserved a section of its own.

Interesting, but one of those items that is of little use to anybody other than a collector of fans.

I very much doubt that the link to the book can be proven unless a unique serial number, or some other definitive mark, can be matched.

Alas, just because an item is rate, it doesn't make it value, and I'd be quite surprised if this actually sells.

Kind regards,

Phil

Hi Phil,

I think it will definitely sell due to its quirkiness and extreme rarity. I remember a similar item sold for £190 hammer so around £230 with commission at the Wallis & Wallis Webley closing down sale in 2006.

I am going to book mark that one as it is certainly an interesting item, and something I would have on my desk at work, but not for that money. :D

I didn't actually realise that Webley made such items. Any other items that come to mind besides airguns and fans?

Kind regards,

Phil

Hi Phil,

I know they distributed a lot of promotional items carrying their name such as playing cards, watches etc. A bit like the pellets and early telescopic sights sold as Webley products but outsourced to specialist suppliers.

I am very surprised, as I didn't think it would get many takers at opening offer price.

One to watch out for at cat boot fairs!

It ended up going for £470 in the end with £22 postage.

Didn't think it would be this popular.

After re-reading the relevant section from Chris Thrale's excellent Webley Air Rifles book, it would appear that the fans are especially rare as most were intended for export. Apparently, several other examples apart from the Webley Auction example have sold fairly recently at similarly high prices, so maybe not such a great surprise after all.

Having followed the latter end of this sale , you can't help but accept that with such a rare item comes such a high price. Another webley raretey is the table lamp; this was a cylinder shade lamp with a woodland/water scene on it and there was a heat activated sleeve that caused a rotating action which brought the scene "to life" the same as some flame effect fires. I owned one but swapped it for an Acvoke pistol in the 80's then sold the pistol 'stupid boy' really wish I still had both of them now, and what price would the lamp achieve? still in its box and 'mint' condition. bellringer

More than likely the only place to pick up such items now, at a reasonable rate, is a car boot sale where the owner doesn't know what they have.

Hello,

I have never seen the lamp, but have come across playing cards, watches etc marked with the Webley logo and used as promotional items.

I remember having a BSA bike when I was a kid and wonder if such things have an appeal for BSA enthusiasts today.

The Acvoke is a nice pistol and must have given Webley a bit of competition while they were available. I bought one to make up the small (Tell 2), medium (Thunderbolt Junior) and large (Acvoke) versions of the same design. Even though the Tell 2 is not of British manufacture it was much earlier and formed the basis for the larger British pistols so had to be added.
